Last Christmas my parents gifted us with an iPad that we have turned into an educational tool for our children. It is dedicated to educational games, and each week the boys are allowed certain times to play. The iPad also has been perfect as we tend to do a lot of traveling, and it keeps the children entertained while on the go and during long car rides. It’s amazing how quick our children can pick up certain lessons and new words through the educational apps. Each day it seems like they are coming up with new expressions and phrases, a few of them have caught me off guard, and when I asked them where they learned it, they respond with the name of an app.
Captain McFinn Swim & Play:
This past week 4 year old Trevor has been enjoying Captain McFinn Swim & Play, which is a children’s app, aimed at kids ages 3-5, that allows the user to interact with a live host who can praise the child for doing well. One of my favorite features is the ability to type in the child’s name and the host will address and congratulate the child by name. Being a younger sibling, Trevor often feels left out as he knows how much fun his brother has at school, so I make sure to give him the extra support and praise that he needs, and having the game call him by his name made him feel important. The host helps the parent and child navigate through an interactive experience, learning important pro-social life lessons, such as kindness and sharing, in a fun and engaging way. Children and their parents can now touch content in a way that has never been done before – and all in a secure setting alongside their friends.
In Captain McFinn Swim & Play, Preschoolers can explore the interactive deep sea by choosing a fish avatar, and using their finger to guide the fish around where he/she will be able to play games and engage in learning activities. Along the way the The Deep Sea Explorer will share fun stories & videos and encourage the child throughout the learning experiences. Children will watch videos and learn powerful messages about friendship and how to always be a friend to everyone, even if they see someone isn’t being nice. Another message that was important to me is that making art is not about being perfect, it’s about having fun which I have been trying to get trough to Trevor, as he often gets discouraged because he cannot draw as well as his older brother.
By interacting with Captain McFinn Swim & Play, children will learn about sharing and being polite, playing in groups, being thankful, respecting others, asking for help, throwing out garbage/recycling when you find it in a place where it doesn’t belong and being a friend to everyone. The app features full length McFinn episodes and music videos and daily learning activities guided by the Explorer. Children will receive badges for completing the learning activities, which is one of Trevor’s favorite features, he is all about receiving his badges and takes pride in showing them to me.

The iPad app, available from the Apple iTunes Store, is based on the popular Captain McFinn storybook character who lives in the undersea world of Sand Dusty Reef with his friends. The Captain McFinn Swim & Play is only available for the iPad, it is not compatible with the iPhone.
The Captain McFinn Swim & Play app is available using a subscription model. The freemium subscription model offers 10 minutes of free play at the start of the game, with subscription tiers of 1-month, 3-month and 6-month periods. The pricing is $4.59, $3.59 and $2.59 per month..
*The app complies with all COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) safety standards, so although parents/children can see the host, the host cannot see them. Through proprietary technology, the host reacts to prompts, responses and creations by the child and texts from the parent (through a secure chat box) to make the interactive experience truly customized.
