For the longest time Trevor would think that I could just purchase anything I wanted with my debit card. I would constantly use it at the gas station, restaurants, and grocery store as I rarely carried cash on me. He thought of it as magic money and in his eyes it was endless so he couldn’t understand why I told him that I didn’t have enough money to purchase certain things, or that we didn’t need something, “just use your card Mommy” he would say. He didn’t realize that it was tied to my bank account, and I needed to have that money available before I made purchases.
When I do have cash on hand I now have the boys help me count out the dollar bills and coins to give to the clerk. It has helped them to get a better understanding about the value of a dollar and how much I actually pay for groceries to feed our family or gas in our car.
