Mom, do I have enough money to buy that toy?
Can you just buy anything with your debit card?
How much is two quarters?
For the longest time Trevor would think that I could just purchase anything I wanted with my debit card. I would constantly use it at the gas station, restaurants, and grocery store as I rarely carried cash on me. He thought of it as magic money and in his eyes it was endless so he couldn’t understand why I told him that I didn’t have enough money to purchase certain things, or that we didn’t need something, “just use your card Mommy” he would say. He didn’t realize that it was tied to my bank account, and I needed to have that money available before I made purchases.
When I do have cash on hand I now have the boys help me count out the dollar bills and coins to give to the clerk. It has helped them to get a better understanding about the value of a dollar and how much I actually pay for groceries to feed our family or gas in our car.
Now you can teach children about spending, saving money, and the value of a dollar with the new Pretend & Play Teaching ATM Bank. Children will learn about withdrawing, depositing, and saving money with the electronic ATM bank.
Pretend & Play Teaching ATM Bank
The Learning Resources Pretend & Play Teaching ATM Bank is a working electronic ATM bank that allows children to practice math and money skills through pretend play. Children can learn about adding, subtracting, coin identification and place value. The ATM bank recognizes coins, has a mechanical bill feeding and has a pretend thumbprint sensor. When a coin is inserted into the machine, the ATM will state what type of coin it is; dime, penny, quarter, or nickle allowing children to learn and identify coins as the size and color is comparable to real money.
The bank recognizes play and real coins, and when coins are deposited the ATM card savings balance increases. To add dollar bills or withdraw, children can use the addition and subtraction buttons.
The kids often set up a little shop and think that it is fun to act like mom at the ATM and withdraw money, even with a pin number. My kids see me entering a pin number every time I withdraw money from the ATM and thought that it was cool that they had to enter a PIN number for their own ATM card. Of course since I won’t share my secret number, they wont share theirs either.
The Pretend & Play Teaching ATM Bank not only helps children to learn about money & the importance of savings, but it also gives them better understanding on what an ATM is and why I have to stop at one occasionally.
